…Kevin Dougherty is a patient man. Back in 2005, he saw a development opportunity in Johnston County, so he bought a small piece of property along I-95. “Then the recession hit, so we sat it out,” he says. “I was initially interested in 10 acres. Then we went on the hunt for good dirt. Then it went up to 90 acres. Now it’s 245 acres.”

And soon, it will be Eastfield, a proposed regional, mixed-use development at I-95, N.C. 42 (which is soon to be called I-42) and U.S. 70-A that will feature retail, medical, professional offices, hotels, senior living and residential, and potentially, light industrial activity. “We’re still in the land-assembly phase and actually looking at making it a little larger,” Dougherty says.
